Alaska Black Cod or Sablefish

(Anoplopoma fimbria)

The world's largest population of black cod, also known as sablefish, is found in Alaska. The state tightly regulates the harvest, which ensures healthy fish stocks over the long haul. If you have never tried black cod then head to your local sushi or Japanese restaurant, but call them first to see if Alaskan black cod is on the menu.

Fast fact: Black cod aren't actually cod! They're really sablefish and only resemble codfish.

The average size of a commercially-caught sablefish is approximately 2 feet with a weight of under 10 pounds. Because the meat has high oil content, Alaska sablefish is very flavorful and excellent for smoking. The flesh is white and has a velvety texture with amazing flavor.

Black cod is full of heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids. There is 1.8 grams of it in a 3.5-ounce serving.

Most American have never tried black cod, which is ashame since it tastes so good. The majority of black cod harvested in Alaska is shipped to Japan where it is highly prized.
